WAUG 2026: Assistant Secretary General Explains Strict Accreditation Rules, Confirms 50 Universities for Games and Host Readiness

Prof. Boluwaji G. Jayesimi, Assistant Secretary General of the West African University Games (WAUG), explained that strict accreditation requirements are being enforced for the 15th edition of the Games to ensure only eligible university students participate, given WAUG's affiliation with FASU and FISU. Athletes must be no older than 25, be genuine students, and provide documentation including admission letters, school fees payment evidence, and current session registration. These measures prevent universities from bringing in non-student professionals or national champions just to win medals, and they align with FISU rules that feed into the All-Africa University Games and World University Games. About 50 universities had registered interest as of September 29, with the final accreditation deadline set for October 2. Host institution Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, is expected to be ready with accommodation and transportation arrangements, and the event will feature 17 sporting events, including e-sports. Prof. Jayesimi encouraged young athletes to focus on education and gain university admission to participate in future editions.
