OAU Unveils WAUG 2026 Mascot and Logo Ahead of October Games

Preparations for the 2026 West African University Games (WAUG) gathered momentum on Tuesday as the Local Organising Committee (LOC) officially approved and unveiled the competition's mascot and logo ahead of the tournament in October.

The multi-sport event will be hosted by Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, from October 2 to 12, with student-athletes from 13 West African countries expected to compete across several sporting disciplines.

The newly introduced mascot draws heavily from Yoruba culture and heritage, reflecting the identity of the host city, Ile-Ife. It features the iconic Olokun head, a revered symbol associated with prosperity, wealth, and the sea in Yoruba mythology. The design also incorporates the Opele, a traditional divination chain, alongside cowries, which historically also served as a symbol of wealth and prestige.

Speaking after the approval, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and OAU Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. E.O. Akinfala, described the unveiling as an important milestone in the university's preparations for the Games.

According to Prof. Akinfala, the mascot and logo represent more than the visual identity of the tournament, saying they evoke the cultural heritage of the host institution while promoting the spirit of unity among universities across West Africa.

"The unveiling of our mascot and logo marks a pivotal moment in our journey to host the West African University Games. These symbols are not just emblems; they are the embodiment of our rich cultural heritage and the unifying spirit of WAUG," he said.

Alongside the mascot, organisers also approved the official WAUG logo, which was praised for its simple yet distinctive design. The Local Organising Committee further announced that separate winners emerged in the design competitions for the mascot, logo and medals that will be presented during the Games. They had already promised a reward at the launch of the creative challenge that included many creatives across West Africa.

The 2026 edition is expected to attract participants from Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.

Athletes are also expected to compete in several events, including football, basketball, athletics, swimming and other sports that form part of the WAUG programme.

With the official identity of the Games now unveiled, it is expected that organisers will turn their attention to the remaining operational plans, including making the games digitally accessible, as OAU prepares to welcome university athletes from across the region for one of West Africa's biggest collegiate sporting events.
