Chebbak Crowned Queen: Moroccan Captain Beats Ajibade to CAF Women's Player of the Year Award
In a thrilling conclusion at the 2025 CAF Awards in Rabat, Morocco, Ghizlane Chebbak, captain of the Moroccan national team, was named CAF Women's Player of the Year, claiming Africa’s most prestigious individual honour. Chebbak beat Nigerian captain Rasheedat Ajibade and fellow Moroccan Sanaa Mssoudy to take home the award.
Chebbak’s triumph caps an outstanding year at both club and international level. Her standout performance came at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where she claimed the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top goal-scorer and guided the Atlas Lionesses to a memorable run to the final.
The win is a milestone for Moroccan football as it reinforces the nation’s growing prominence in women’s football on the continent.
Nigerian captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who also had a remarkable year, narrowly missed out. Ajibade played a key role in helping the Super Falcons secure a record-extending WAFCON title and was named Player of the Tournament, a recognition that made her a strong favourite.
Despite her successful move to Paris Saint-Germain and continued excellent form, Chebbak’s combination of scoring prowess and team achievements ultimately tipped the scales in her favour.
