Heartbreak! - Bayelsa Queens Miss Out on CAF Women’s Champions League Spot After Loss to ASEC Mimosas

It was a heartbreaking night for Nigeria’s only female continental representatives, Bayelsa Queens, as they fell 9–8 on penalties to ASEC Mimosas in the final of the CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU-B Qualifiers.

The Prosperity Girls endured a nightmare start, conceding just four minutes in when Ami Diallo toe-poked the ball past goalkeeper Monle Omini, giving the Ivorians an early lead.

Bayelsa Queens, however, responded swiftly. Emem Essien met a delightful cross from Alaba Olabiyi with a glancing header to level the score.

The Nigerians created further chances but ASEC’s defense stood resolute, keeping the game tied 1–1 at the break.

The second half was cagey, with both teams sharing possession and resorting to long-range efforts that rarely troubled either goalkeeper. In the 67th minute, Habibu Ouedraogo had a golden chance to restore ASEC’s lead, but she headed over from point-blank range.

The deadlock persisted through the second half and into extra time, as both sides canceled each other out in a tense contest.

The match was eventually decided by penalties, where ASEC Mimosas held their nerve to win 9–8 in the shoot-out, converting with confidence and leaving Omini with little chance.

Bayelsa Queens’ journey ends in heartbreak, as the Prosperity Girls miss out on a ticket to the CAF Women’s Champions League following their narrow defeat to the Ivorian side.
