DR Congo Stuns Cameroon 1–0: Mbemba Sends Leopards to Final

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) produced one of the biggest shocks of the CAF World Cup Playoff semi-finals, defeating tournament favourites Cameroon 1–0 with a dramatic stoppage-time winner. The tense encounter, played on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at the Al-Barid Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, sent the Leopards into Sunday’s final against Nigeria.

From kickoff, the match was one defined by discipline, physicality, and cautious play from both sides as it was a very intense midfield battle with neither team willing to overcommit or risk conceding early. Clear-cut chances were rare, making fans from both teams very anxious as they watched.

The opening half offered little in terms of goalmouth action. DR Congo, coached by Sébastien Desabre, stayed compact and organised, frustrating Cameroon’s attack led by Bryan Mbeumo. Despite Cameroon's attempts to break through, DR Congo’s structure held firm, ensuring it was a goalless half-time score.

The tempo then increased after the break as Cameroon pushed harder for an opener. DR Congo nearly took the lead when Cédric Bakambu forced Andre Onana into a sharp low save. Moments later, Mbeumo fired wide from a promising position, keeping the deadlock intact.

As the game approached the final minutes, it seemed certain the match would head for extra time just like the earlier Nigeria vs. Gabon semi-final.

But the drama exploded in added time.

90+1’ Goal, DR Congo: A late corner was sent deep into the box, going over several players. Captain Chancel Mbemba found space at the back post and hammered home a powerful finish past a helpless Onana.

The stunning late strike sent the Leopards into a frenzy while plunging Cameroon into despair. Despite a frantic late push, the Indomitable Lions couldn’t find an equaliser, and the final whistle confirmed DR Congo’s remarkable upset victory.

What Comes Next

The win sets up a thrilling CAF Playoff final between Nigeria and DR Congo on Sunday, November 16, in Rabat. The champion of that matchup will advance to the inter-confederation play-offs, keeping their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive.
