The 27th Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Games officially kicked off with an electrifying opening ceremony at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) J.T. Useni Stadium today, Saturday, November 8, 2025. The spectacular event concluded just hours ago, and has smoothly transitioned into the main competitive phase, with student-athletes from across Nigeria now ready to battle for glory.

The ceremony, which unified thousands under the theme, “Unity, Play in Peace,” was a vibrant cultural and sporting showcase. More than 4,100 athletes, representing universities nationwide, marched in a colourful procession that symbolized the power of collegiate sports to bridge regional divides.

A Night of Spectacle and Pledge

The opening ceremony reached its peak with a blend of colour, culture, and commitment. The evening began with the Parade of Honour, as contingents proudly marched across the arena, waving their university flags in a grand display of unity and competition. The air then came alive with Cultural Fusion, as traditional performances showcased the vibrant heritage of Plateau State and electrified the crowd.

The highlight came when student representatives Azi Augustine and Piscilla Osiri lit the Flame of Competition, which symbolized the official start of the Games. Immediately after, Ondo State Governor, His Excellency Lucky Aiyedatiwa, declared the Games open, marking a historic moment of celebration and anticipation. The ceremony concluded with a Commitment to Fair Play, as athletes and officials took their oaths, pledging to integrity, discipline, and true sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

Leadership Commits to Excellence

Dignitaries present emphasized the importance of hosting NUGA as a tool for youth development and unity. Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang reaffirmed the host state’s commitment, noting major investments in upgrading facilities, including the stadium’s tartan track, and assuring all participants of comprehensive security and logistical support.

Vice-Chancellor of UNIJOS, Professor Tanko Ishaya, expressed the institution’s ambition to not only host successfully but also to "set new benchmarks" and unveil Nigeria's next generation of sporting talent.

The Battle Begins

With the ceremonial dust settled, the focus now shifts entirely to the competitive arena. Athletes will be engaged in a rigorous schedule across 23 disciplines starting from tomorrow, including highly anticipated matches in football, volleyball, athletics, swimming, and more.

The 27th NUGA Games promise to be a crucial proving ground for young stars and will run until November 16, 2025, demonstrating the unifying spirit and sporting prowess of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
