"They were very interested in her" - Mother of new Super Falcons invitee opens up on daughter's decision to represent Nigeria ahead of Malawi

Super Falcons Chioma Okafor WAFCON

One major shock from Justin Madugu's Super Falcons squad was the inclusion of the dual-nationalised attacker, Chioma Okafor.

Born to a Nigerian father and Malawian mother, the University of Connecticut star is eligible to play for both Malawi and Nigeria, but upon contact by the NFF, decided to play for the Super Falcons.

She was immediately added to the squad for WAFCON 2025, set to go down in Morrocco, an inclusion which caused fans to raise eyebrows.

As a results of her dual-nationality, it would have been a possibility for Chioma to pick Malawi over Nigeria, but the 21 year old chose to represent the Nine-time African Champions.

Her mom, Patricia Jiya Okafor, has explained it was an independent decision made by her daughter, without either of her parents' interference.

When asked if it was her who advised Chioma to settle for Nigeria, she said;

“It’s not me, it was her choice. Nigeria wrote a letter, I didn’t have any say, it was her choice, I told her to choose so that she would not regret in the future, so it came from her.” she explained to BolaNews

"Her dad was not even around when she came up with a decision, she continued. She asked me, and I told her to do what would make her happy. She thought maybe mom will not be happy if she settles for Nigeria since I have been celebrating her [while] carrying the Malawi flag, so I told her to do what pleases her. That’s when she settled for Nigeria. I never influenced her decision."

When asked if she thought the Malawian Federation was not as serious as the NFF, she said;

“I can’t say, I can’t say anything because it’s not me, it’s them, I don’t want to say anything against anyone, so no, I can’t say anything. All I know is that she trained with them in 2015. In February [2025], they contacted her to come over, but she couldn’t make it. But the Nigerian team they were there asking for her; they are the ones who helped her to get a Nigerian passport. I have never seen it even. They told her to go to Atlanta, she went there and made the passport for her, so you can see how serious they are. They got his passport last month, so they were very interested in her.” She concluded.

Chioma is expected to have arrived Morrocco with the rest of the squad, as preparation hits top gear ahead of WAFCON.
