It’s a major step forward for Nigerian footballer Chioma Okafor, as she signs her first professional contract with NWSL side North Carolina Courage.
In a statement on their official website, the club announced today that they have acquired the services of the 22-year-old on a three-year deal, with an option for an additional year.
Chioma spent her collegiate career with the University of Connecticut soccer team, which she joined in 2022 after graduating from the Berkshire School in Sheffield.
She also became only the sixth “Husky” to be named a third-team NCAA All-American, earning recognition as one of the nation’s best college players.
In 57 games at UConn, Chioma scored 30 goals and provided five assists. She was named United Coaches First Team All-East in her final three seasons and earned All-American honours three times, after receiving second-team recognition in her first year.
The 22-year-old was also part of the Nigerian team that won the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations, although she did not make an appearance.

Speaking after completing the move, Chioma Okafor said:
“I am excited to call North Carolina home and sign with the Courage. From the early conversations with the team, I fell in love with the developmental plan they laid out for me and the drive to build back this club’s championship roots. I can’t wait to get to work in 2026."
Courage Chief Soccer Officer Ceri Bowley also had glowing words for Chioma, highlighting her attacking qualities and competitive mindset as major reasons behind the signing.
“We’re excited to welcome Chioma Okafor to the North Carolina Courage. Chioma is a dynamic, fearless attacker whose pace, power, and willingness to take on defenders bring dimensions we’ve been looking to add to our front line. Beyond her on-field qualities, Chioma brings a competitive edge and a growth mindset that fits the culture we’re building. She works, she listens, and she’s hungry to develop. We’re delighted Chioma is joining the Courage, and we’re looking forward to integrating her into our squad."
