Port Harcourt Hosts 2025 NWFL Annual General Assembly: Setting the Pace for a New Era in Women’s Football
The city of Port Harcourt came alive on October 29, 2025, as the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) held its much-anticipated 2025 Annual General Assembly (AGA). It was a gathering that brought together top football administrators, club chairpersons, general managers, and media representatives to chart the future of women’s football in Nigeria.

The event, hosted at the Golden Tulip Hotel, saw wide participation from stakeholders across the NWFL Premiership and Championship divisions. According to the official NWFL announcement, the AGA serves as the league’s highest decision-making platform, providing an avenue to review the past season, discuss strategic reforms, and unveil plans for the 2025/2026 campaign.
Leadership and Representation
The Assembly opened with a vibrant session chaired by Madam Aisha Falode, NWFL Board Member and former Chairperson, who officially declared the event open on behalf of the NFF President.
In his welcome address, the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Rivers State, Barrister Chris Green, who also represented the Governor, formally welcomed participants to Port Harcourt.
Stakeholders, including club representatives, administrators, and media officials, were fully engaged in discussions aimed at promoting the league’s growth.
Major Announcements and Highlights
One of the most anticipated moments of the Assembly was the 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership Draw, where fixtures for the new season were unveiled amid great excitement.
Following the draws, the league officially announced that the 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership season will kick off on November 26, 2025.

A Look Ahead
The 2024/2025 campaign had seen Bayelsa Queens crowned Premiership champions for a record sixth time after their Super Six triumph in Ikenne. With the addition of newly promoted teams: Sunshine Queens (Ondo), Castmog Ladies (Ogun), Ahudiyannem Queens (Abia), and Imo Striker Queens (Imo), the league expands to 20 teams, promising an even more competitive season.
Meanwhile, in the Championship, debutants such as Rangers Women, Rosaria Victrix, and Solo Wonders, alongside returning side Dreamstar Ladies, are set to make their mark in the upcoming 2026 campaign.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer Ms. Modupe Shabi expressed optimism about the Assembly’s outcomes, noting that it provided “an opportunity for fruitful deliberations as we collectively advance the growth and development of women’s football in Nigeria.”
With the AGA successfully concluded, the focus now shifts to the kickoff of another thrilling NWFL season, one that promises renewed energy toward empowering women through sport.
